Excellent as always. It's been a while, admittedly, since I've taken the time and attention span to read one of your fantastic art entries.
nice work. i wonder whether it's true, whether she haunts the (less-than) hallowed halls ...

I must admit I didn't know much about this queen before I read your post. . .
From my reading, I've determined that of all Henry's wives, Catherine Howard was perhaps the most brazen and lacking in discretion. All the same, execution is a rather harsh punishment for a naughty girl.

Ms. Pants - Thank you! I hadn't meant for this to be a biography, but it sort of developed that way, and therefore was a little longer than I suspected. Thanks for stopping by!

WBaby - There have been many stories about Catherine's ghost. Much has been seen, heard, commented on, but never truly confirmed.

eliz.s. - It's an interesting story, though there were no historical landmarks attributed to her reign, such as it was. It's just pathetic; that in any other life she would have had the time of her life. It was just by chance that she became a queen.

Red Pen - Brazen and lacking in descretion - a dangerous combination. In her harsh 16th century environiment, she was bound to come to a poor end. Lying to a king was a bad idea, but he would have forgiven her. But adultery injured his pride and she had to pay for the damage.

I read this at about 4:00 a.m. last night while suffering from caffeine overload. I couldn't think of a semi-intelligent response then...and I still can't. I just wanted to let you know I read it and enjoyed it.

Swigging coffee at 4AM? Shame!

Still, I'm glad you shook off the caffeine jitters to come over here. Gladder still that you enjoyed poor Catherine's story.

What a story. I first looked upon the picture as just another portrait. Then as I read through your description, it came alive. I started noticing the coarse features, the modest dress, the frothy cuffs. The necklace around her neck started looking like a mortal wound.

You have an amazing talent, Aubrey. I feel lucky to be able to enjoy your posts at a single click.
Boy, what a mess that all was with those Henry wives. From what I understand he was really gross. This photo of Catherine looks a little nervous and frightened, but not at first glance. It took me a minute to decide that she looks more frightened than noble or self-assured. I'm guessing she was aware of her demise.

Fabulous piece! Your writing always whisks me away.

Tudor history is my favourite...I am in love with Robert Dudley! Philipa Gregory's books are very good for that period.
I never wanted to be queen...

This is a good story. I am interested in how historians determined her identity. Actually, I think that entire period is one about which I'd like to learn much more.
insanely overwritten!
