"..I felt the wind brush through the patterned barbs and wondered if perhaps my arm felt a little lighter? I fancied that it wasn't necessary to swing my arm back and forth - that it was instead resting on a cushion of air. If I looked down again, I wondered, would it just be upon city-ignored sidewalks or upon the tops of houses?"

Shivers with delight!!! What an excellent vision for me to carry with me to work this morning! Perhaps I'll pick up on of my chicken's feathers on my way out. No..not the same at all! Thanks for the smile this early a.m.! :D
I get calling cards from birds too. .....
The one you were given, is worthy of your writing.
Enjoyed this.
Excellent prose and comments, both; to the latter, I cannot add, only echo.

I always enjoy your classic writing Aubrey. I think you could tighten this one. Shorten it a bit. Most of yours are perfect in every way. I'd like to see you publish a book of these with photos.

I saw a hawk on a branch two feet above my head eight years ago. It was above a dead crow it had just killed. It stared at me for a few minutes and then flew away. I was a little frightened.

beautiful and evocative. I glimpsed a single sentinel in dead tree by roadside passing yesterday. lurkers making themselves sneakily impressed upon our consciousness.

So beautiful. I hope you see your visitor the next time he decides to drop by.

I love the way you evoke a world out of a single feather.

The hawk left you a token; perhaps it is your totem animal. I've thought about totem animals lately since one of my teachers at Naropa remembered our names by what our animals were and I think mine is a deer because they are so shy and tentative, but also quick and lithe.
